Young Money star Nicki Minaj recently opened up on her method behind deciding who she collaborates with and gave a few hints toward what fans can expect from the upcoming Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded sophomore album.
Asked what throwback music she gets down with, Nicki revealed she prefers greats like the late Whitney Houston.
"When I go old school it's more about Diana Ross and Deniece Williams and Whitney. Her first album is one of my all-time favorites. .... [Who's next in collaborations?] Oh my God!!! Well I have to say, for me, genre does not play into it. And I am lucky because I get so many amazing requests. I just had that big one with Madonna. I collaborate when I feel it's right. [How's the new album?] The album is like a collage of all my emotions. I am not sticking to any particular style. I am doing what I feel without restrictions. So it's very free and very me." In 2011, Minaj expressed how picky she is when it comes down to collaborations.
"Well, you know, [Drake], I have been keeping everything sort of stored inside of me," Nicki said. "So I'm just in complete tour mode. Yeah, I've been getting a lot of requests to do some features, but if I can't give myself wholeheartedly, I always pass. I definitely never want to be just doing too many features that they start getting watered-down and I'm not giving my whole, true self." (MTV)
Earlier the same year, the self-proclaimed Barbie revealed her intent to stop doing collabos for 24 months.
"I'm done with the collabs," Minaj revealed in an interview. "No more collabs for the next two years. [Britney Spears?] Oh yeah. [smiles] Britney's a snatch like me and she's cute. Yes. We might could do something." (Hip Hollywood)
The rapper's upcoming sophomore album is slated to hit stores this spring.
"New Album Date: April 3rd. Pink Friday: ROMAN RELOADED. But have no fear. Tons of surprises before then ;). Love Always, HB," she tweeted January 20th.
