West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar has finally opened up on the recent mysterious passing of 25 year-old aspiring musician Alori Joh and how much of an impact her death has had on him.
Recalling when he found out the bad news, Lamar admitted being initially shaken up but then getting inspired to keep her drive alive.
"I actually was in the studio with Q-Tip, and it threw me all the way off because you in the vibe, you in good spirits. You making records then you hear some devastating news like that," Lamar said in an interview. "It sits you back for a second. What I had to do was basically gather myself and try to stay focused. Continue to move with what she was pushing, and that was being a star and an entertainer. So when I thought about that I hopped back in that booth and I continued going." (Karen Civil)
Earlier this month, fellow West Coast artist SchoolBoy Q publicly alluded to her untimely passing.
"smoking one for alori JoH............. peace Homie," he tweeted. (SchoolBoy Q's Twitter)
Kendrick Lamar is largely responsible for getting Alori mainstream attention.
Lamar's national exposure over the last two years helped to bring attention towards Alori's vocal abilities. She sang on 'Heaven & Hell,' a song that appeared on his 'Overly Dedicated' mixtape in 2010. She was also featured on 'HiiiPOWER,' featured on the rap star's lauded project 'Section.80.' Schoolboy Q, who featured Alori on 'Phenomenon,' a song off his 'Setbacks' mixtape, released last year, paid homage to the fallen entertainer by "smoking one" and shared the news with his Twitter followers. In past interviews, Alori spoke on wanting to make a bigger name for herself.
An interview from West Coast YouTube show Toast It Up highlighted Alori Joh, revealing the singer's sassy and sultry side while she displayed a bit of humility. In an AllWestEverything interview from last September, Alori was candid in wanting to be taken more seriously than just a singer of hooks. "I am definitely am working on new material. I wanted people to start asking me about my music because they are so familiar with my features," said Alori in the interview. (Hip Hop Wired)
Specific details surrounding Alori Joh's death are still unknown.
