[The N: Each week, SOHH asks entertainment personalities to name the most underrated emcees in hip-hop. After EA Sports designer Sean Ramjagsingh gave Nas props earlier this week, radio veteran Big Boy crowns N.W.A. SOHH Underrated.]
I can only get one pick for SOHH Underrated? D*mn. SOHH Underrated and I only get one. Hmmm..... N.W.A.
The reason why I'm going with N.W.A. is because they came out and said sh*t that we had never heard before. [Songs like] "Dope Man," "F*ck the Police" were talking about selling sh*t on the street. The way they were cursing on vinyl was something that I had never heard before.
I have to name them SOHH Underrated because there's a lot of cats out there that understand N.W.A. (and I'm not saying that everybody needs to be cursing because N.W.A. did it), but I don't think there's a lot of people who understood the root of where a lot of that sh*t came from.
I look at [rappers today] and it's like, "Oh, [they're emulating] N.W.A., they're wearing khakis, they're wearing black"; they've been dressing like that recently. So I think if there's anybody that's underrated, it's what that whole entire N.W.A. movement was and how they took the West Coast and threw it all around the world.
So I would give SOHH Underrated to them.
Big Boy is a radio host currently heard on Los Angeles Rhythmic contemporary station KPWR (Power 106) in the mornings from 5 to 10, as well as numerous radio stations across the United States. His stage name derives from his formerly large build, which he modified through duodenal switch surgery in 2003, leading to a weight loss of over 250 pounds.
