[When I Get Free: Each week, SOHH asks entertainment personalities to name who they feel is the most underrated emcee in hip-hop. After Big Boy gave N.W.A. props last week, singer/actress Baiyu crowns Shyne SOHH Underrated.]
Even though I don't think he's completely underrated, I think a lot of people actually give him a lot of credit, I don't think people really understand the struggles he's been through to make his music. That artist is Shyne. I'm naming him SOHH Underrated.
I was actually able to speak to his manager and this conversation has always just stuck in my mind. He told me there was just so much put into creating an album for Shyne while he was going through all of his [legal] struggles [in the early 2000's]. I think you know what I mean when I say that.
I just think it's so clever and there's such a story there and there's such a passion for what he loves to do that his music doesn't stop going. Even given all of these other circumstances, he's able to create music for his fans and for the hip-hop community. He creates music that's historic and memorable and I think that's something that's very underrated.
Believe it or not, I have not been aware of Shyne for too many years but it was literally after I heard the story from his manager about five or six years ago that I really became a fan.
Baiyu is a Chinese-American singer-songwriter and actress. In the early 90's, her family moved to Maryland where she was then given the American name of "Sara". Baiyu has appeared in several independent films, worked with Seventeen Magazine and was a VJ for the mtvU show "The Freshmen" from 2006-2008. She later graduated from Princeton University in 2008 with a degree in Sociology. Along with her passion for music, Baiyu is also a brand ambassador for popular clothing line Skinny Bitch Apparel and has many upcoming ventures slated to kick-off in 2012.
