Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky sheds light on the state of fashion and its extravagent embrace by the hip-hop community in the new issue of Complex magazine.
Asked for his opinion on hip-hop and fashion's bond, Rocky points to the early struggle stories of most rap artists.
"As black people it was our thing to show that we're not living in poverty and that we can afford extravagant things--that kind of stuck with us," he explaiend So when our great-grandparents were putting on their favorite outfits, it was to put on a front for the hard times. And hip-hop is a bunch of people that never had nothing. Fashion is just an expression. It's an art. It expresses your taste. Good taste is important in hip-hop. I wake up saying I'm going to look the best I can and do what the f*ck I want to do. And that's what it's all about. I don't know if I articulated it good because I'm pretty high right now--and I have a lisp and I'm going to Mars right now." (Complex)
Renowned Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace recently opened up about the late Notorious B.I.G.'s love for her brand.
"I think Biggie was amazing. He came to my shows in Paris many times, and we'd see each other often. He always used to talk so nicely about my family. I think he was so smart, so intelligent. He had such a mind. So I loved what he was doing and how he was giving people a way to know about Versace--I do think he was giving people a way to know about Versace--I do think a lot of people started to know about Versace because of him." Young Money's Nicki Minaj previously spoke on hip-hop's love for luxury lines like Versace.
"We can remember Biggie Smalls talking about Versace," Nicki, dressed in a multicolor beaded pantsuit topped with a palm-frond accented wig, told us about the late Bad Boy MC. "It's something that as a little girl, growing up in hip-hop, you never really think you'll get a chance to -- I never thought I'd get to model for Versace, you know what I mean?" (MTV)
In 2010, Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West defended his dicey fashion choices like rocking fur coats in light of negative feedback from critics.
"I'M BRIEFLY SADDENED BY NEGATIVE COMMENTS, BUT I HAVE TO REMEMBER THOSE PEOPLE ARE SCARED, INCAPABLE OR JUST PLAIN IDIOTS. WE ARE THE F*CKING ROCK STARS BABY. NO COCAINE, JUST LIFE MY N*GGAS!!
