Drake has reached a level most artists only dream of: Stadium Status. The ability to sell out arena shows not only equals big bucks, but it also shows the large crowds your music has the power to attract. Sure, half of the people in the crowd of a Drake show may be too busy Facebook stalking that girl that got they still think about from high school to sing along with Drizzy, but the fact that they even dropped the money on the tickets has got to count for something, right?
Which is why I was surprised to learn that The King of the Drunk Text Anthems decided to skip the huge arena shows and do small venues for his upcoming "Paradise Club" tour. Paradise Club sounds more like a show you'd catch the Beach Boys at anyway, but that's besides the point. I'm sure Birdman was just as shocked, smaller venues means less seats, less seats means less money. And we all know how much Birdmannington loves his miyyins.
Drake recently came out [pause] to explain why he decided to do something small [pause].
In order to promote The Club Paradise Tour, Drake took time to explain why he's doing club shows instead of going on an arena tour. The YMCMB star also shared his feelings about a more intimate setting and about his connection to longtime fans.(Hip Hop DX)
The Canadian rapper/singer then went on to say that he has to get his mind right for the bigger shows.
"I just like the energy," he told MTV News. "I like people to feel close to me because at the end of the day, I'm still at the beginning of my career so, watching me from the 500 level of an arena, I don't know if I'm mentally there yet. I don't know if I can mentally accept that."(MTV)
Fair enough. I have to admit, I saw The Roots perform once in front of a crowd of 200 people in a small club, it is a much different experience than sitting in a basketball arena and watching a concert. Plus, there's less of a chance of this happening at a club:
Wait: So that's what those guys are paid to do -- stand around for 2 hours just to help Drake up if he falls? Oh ok.
In other news, check out father-to-be and Illuminati Grand Dragon [kidding dammit] Jay-Z all decked out and ready to shell out some presents. Kinda cool seeing Jigga get in the holiday spirit, seems like he's finally traded in his hustler's ambition for a more family-friendly persona.
Speaking of costumes, Batman Back: Check out the first full-lenght trailer to The Dark Knight Rises, in theaters Summer 2012.
