Pittsburgh rap newcomer Mac Miller opens up about tasting instant fame and how much his life has changed over the past 12 months in the new issue XXL Magazine.
Based on an excerpt, Miller details how his independent grind got him to go from rags to riches.
Rest is definitely something Mac can use. It's been a meteoric year for him, one that has taken him from his local public high school's graduation to the verge of international stardom. He just got back from a two-and-a-half-week stint overseas in September, which included shows in Paris, Amsterdam and London. "It's just a journey," Mac says, a hint of accomplishment in his tone. "We started out last year driving eight hours to Indiana in a Volvo station wagon packed up with all dudes in there, just to perform for some people who didn't know who I was. And to see that grow to, I have two buses. And I'm independent... Went in my pocket, pulled out 200 stacks and got two buses." Mac reportedly pulls in between $20,000 and $25,000 per show. Not bad for a kid who still lives at his parents' house. (XXL Mag)
Recently, Miller opened up about his new Blue Slide Park album debuting atop all new music releases last month.
"It's crazy. I've been trying to take it all in," Miller said in an interview. "I've just been in constant motion, so I haven't gotten a chance to really stop and realize how crazy this is that we got the first #1 in 16 years. It's nuts, man. I never really got far enough to see an offer for real -- I got no hatred towards major labels or anything. I never got a chance to hear what they had to say. We just really wanted to stick with our home team and keep it in the family. [The major labels] called [Rostrum Records founder] Benjy and wanted to talk, but Benjy was just on some 'We're not trying to talk right now, we're doin' this independently.' And we just left it at that." (MTV)
The rapper's album sold over 144,000 copies in its first seven days.
