[The Wrap-Up: With the year coming to a close, this week SOHH celebrates entertainment personalities' most favorite 2011 SOHH Underrated emcees. After Roscoe Dash gave Wale/J. Cole shine last week, we highlight Detroit's hometown hero eLZhi for receiving frequent love throughout 2011.]
In today's times, the most underrated rapper out right now I would have to say is Elzhi. Elzhi from Slum Village, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated rappers out. I don't know what it is exactly about him. It's hard to really explain it. I think people who hear him automatically are like, "God d*mn this motherf*cker is nice!" But it's the same thing with me, I just want more people to recognize how good he is. That's something important. -Pharoahe Monch (Rapper)
eLZhi is one of the top three greatest rappers of all time to me. That dude can put together words and wordplay that no other can do. His lyrics and what he's saying on tracks is so ridiculous. I just don't think people are recognizing. -Apollo Brown (Producer)
Who is the most underrated, hmm. Let me think about this. I think eLZhi, formerly of Slum Village, is very underrated. He just recently did a live version of Nas' Illmatic and it is the best hip-hop album that I've heard in a really, really, really long time. It just moves me that [the project] didn't get more notoriety. It moves me that it didn't get more notoriety being that Illmatic was such a classic album. You know it ain't too many people that can really compare to Nas. -Rah Digga (Rapper)
I like eLZhi a lot. It's kind of hard because you're not going to get as much credit unless you play the game a certain way. I think he plays the game his way. He put out the Illmatic tribute album and some other things but when I heard him, his verses just kill people when he hops on their songs. He's just murderous. He hasn't been in the game for 20 years or nothing like that but I think eLZhi is really nasty, technical-wise with his rhymes. It may not be for everybody but the way he puts his words together, as a rapper, you're just like, "Wow. Where did that come from? He said something I wish I could have came up with." -Charlie Smarts (Rapper)
