Undefeated professional boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has bigger concerns than facing off against elite fighter Manny Pacquiao next year as he has received a six-month jail sentence for battery this week.
According to reports Mayweather's jail sentence was read to him Wednesday (December 21) afternoon.
Floyd Mayweather is heading to jail after pleading guilty Wednesday in Las Vegas Justice Court to misdemeanor battery domestic violence and harassment charges. Mayweather was sentenced to six months in Clark County jail, but three months of the sentence was suspended. He must surrender to authorities on Jan. 6, 2012. (CNN)
The boxing champ will reportedly be required to serve at least three months at a detention center.
Mayweather will have to serve at least 90 days of the sentence in custody at the Clark County Detention Center, with the other 90 days suspended on the condition that he completes other requirements of his sentencing. More serious felony charges of coercion, robbery and grand larceny were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. (Las Vegas Sun)
In September 2010, Mayweather made headlines for getting arrested on domestic violence charges.
Mayweather, 33, was booked Friday on a grand larceny charge at the Clark County jail and held on $3,000 bail, Las Vegas police Officer Bill Cassell said. Mayweather's lawyer, Richard Wright, said Mayweather is accused of taking an iPhone from Josie Harris, his ex-girlfriend and mother of three of his children. Nevada law calls for a grand-larceny charge when the value of the goods in question is $250 or more. "He surrendered," Wright said, denying the allegations against Mayweather. "He did not commit any grand larceny," Wright told The Associated Press. "Josie can't find her iPhone. We're attempting to find it or replace it. We'll cooperate in the investigation. We expect to get the matter resolved." (ESPN)
Following the reports, the boxer's friend/rap star 50 Cent defended him.
"Another case of angry baby mama wanting money. Police are looking for @FloydMayweather. I just got off the phone with him," 50 tweeted Thursday (September 10).
"She's claiming he hit her but has no bruises. Floyd went to see his kids last night if a fighter of floyd caliber hits u, u would b bruised"
"I talked to him before and after the situation he wasnt even upset. He said he asked her why was the house so dirty she started trippin" (50 Cent's Twitter)
