[Bucktown To DuckDown: With rappers continuing to make their hustle on the indie level but mainstream exposure, this week SOHH is featuring entertainment personalities naming an underground emcee they feel is the most slept on. After Harlem rapper Smoke DZA gave Sean Price the title earlier this week, New York's Donny Goines crowns Duck Down's Skyzoo SOHH Underrated.]

Skyzoo (SOHH Underrated)

I'm not going to be egotistical and name myself. But, I'm going to need a minute to think about this question. I'm just trying to think about it. It's a hard decision to name one because I'll think of many. Many people come to mind when I think of underrated lyricists. D*mn this is a hard question.

It is very hard to go with one person in this category but overall, I personally, as far as lyricism is concerned, have to go with Skyzoo. Granted, Skyzoo has a lot of notoriety and he has a lot of things that many people would die for. He's co-signed by some of the greatest legends. He's done shows worldwide, he's on TV and he's very acclaimed for what he's done.

But overall, I feel a lot of people do not understand the things that he's saying. They don't get it. It goes over their heads. You gotta understand. I'm a relatively newcomer in this game. When I was coming up, I listened to people like Skyzoo, those were my [idols]. You know how people come into the game and say, "I want to be like Jay-Z?" Nah, I wanted to be like Skyzoo.

Just because that was something that made sense to me. I love Jay-Z, I'm sponsored by Rocawear, and [2004's] The Black Album is one of the main reasons why I got into rapping in the first place, but Skyzoo has always been someone to me who has exemplifed lyricism.

He just doesn't get the kind of credit that he deserves. Point blank.

Donny Goines was born in the borough of Manhattan but spent most of his youth going back and forth between Philly, the Bronx, and Harlem. With an incarcerated father and a mother recovering from her battle with a drug addiction meant that Donny would be left to fend for himself and exposed to the allure of the streets at an early age. Ingrained with a street mentality that some can only imitate, Donny knew that to fill the holes in his life, something had to change, something had to happen. His energies had to focus on a positive to avoid the negative. Having been forced to grow up fast, Donny realized in his searching that music was his solace. With an obvious interest in performing, writing and freestyling, hip-hop became a more prominent aspect of Donny's life, it became his salvation.
