[SOHH highlights a hot single each week and offers a unique look at the record. After Rapper Big Pooh put us on to "Make It Thru" last week, producer Cavie explains how he managed to get DMX, N.O.R.E. and Macy Gray on the "Electrolytes" remix.]

Shout-outs to my man, Noreaga. "Electrolytes" is out and really bubbling right now. DMX hopped on it and really came through for the remix. So I really want to share with you how this came together.

A year ago I'm in the studio working and I get this call; "Yo, you're about to work with X. X is coming home [from jail]." I'm [usually] in the studio from about Monday to Wednesday. I actually got to the studio on Sunday and X was supposed to come home on that Tuesday. X didn't make it out that Tuesday. He ended up getting out on that Thursday.

So Tuesday I'm in the studio and I made these tracks I was going to play for him as soon as he got out. I knew all of his energy would be up. So N.O.R.E. walks in and he's like, "What are you doing?" I tell him I'm playing these records and he's like, "Yo! This sh*t is bananas." This was actually my first time meeting N.O.R.E.

He was going crazy with every track I played but the first track really stuck out in his head. He's like, "Yo, got back to that first one." I'm smiling and I could tell he liked it. I told him, "Yeah, I did this for X," and he got this look in his face like, "Yo, you did this for DMX!? X is my man. Please, if you just let me rhyme on this, I will murder it. We'll just put X on it later."

I looked around the room and saw we were just sitting around there doing nothing and so I said, "Why not?" Then N.O.R.E. starts writing his rhyme and he says, "We need a female on this chorus. What do we do?" So in the meantime, I was already working on Macy Gray's [next] album. I called Macy and she said, "Sure, I'll do it."

He had no idea Macy had been working. He's like, "Oh, Macy Gray?" It's crazy how we did the record. The magic was done there. Then X gets out two days later and you can go on YouTube to find this but there's a video showing X's real response to hearing the music. He was like, "Yo! This track is crazy!" I think that was a classic moment of how you make music and N.O.R.E. was able to strike a hit out of it.

Cavie has been producing music since he was 12 years old, with a little known group at the time called N.W.A.. Soon after, the group blew up and so did Cavie. He has traveled around the world producing music for the biggest names in hip-hop, so it was no surprise when he got the call to produce Cee Lo Green's new solo album. This project is not the only album on Cavie's plate. He recently agreed to work with Teddy Riley and another album for Macy Gray, and he's also crafting hits for the comeback albums of Goodie Mob, T.I. and DMX.
