[SOHH highlights a single each week and offers a unique look at the song. After The Away Team's Khrysis and Boog share why they chose Talib Kweli and Rapsody to "Set it Off" with, the producer half of the duo dissects the Phonte track "Everything is Falling Down".]
"Everything is Falling Down" is just me and Phonte doin' what we do.
We've got a long history of working together: I've worked with Little Brother through The Minstrel Show, I've worked with Phonte on Leave it All Behind, Getback, and I recorded some of the songs on Leftback and did a lot of the production on that album.
Working with Phonte comes from a long line of history between the two of us. He's family, so whenever we work together it's like coming back home.
The way this song came together started with Phonte sending me the sample, and was like, "Yo, I want something with this." See -- we trade music. I send him things to listen to and he sends me things to listen to. He may send me a song and I flip it, then send it back to him.
When I heard the final version of "Everything is Falling Down", I was like, "Whooooooo!"
When I'm into a song, I [emit] that reaction a lot. I love makin' music because it's fun for me. If it's not fun, then its probably not right.
The Away Team is a hip hop duo consisting of MC Sean Boog and producer Khrysis, both of whom are members of the North Carolina rap collective the Justus League. Their latest album, Scars and Stripes, is available now.Check out Phonte's "Everything Falls Down," produced by Khrysis below:
