Mobb Deep fans anticipating music from Prodigy and Havoc have had their wishes granted as the rap veterans finally reveal a new record deal.
Speaking via a statement, Mobb Deep announced a partnership with Sony Music independent distributor RED.
"After almost 20 years in this industry, it was inevitable for us to take matters into our own hands. We feel that RED is the perfect home for our brand," Prodigy said in a press release issued to MTV News. "We know who our fans are and what they want from Mobb Deep. We're excited to take a new step in our career," Havoc added. President of RED Distribution Bob Morelli offered his support of the newly inked group and label. "Mobb Deep is an iconic act, having been on the cutting edge of music and social commentary for years. We are happy and excited to distribute the next chapter in their musical career." (MTV)
Last spring, West Coast rap newcomers Odd Future signed a distribution deal with RED.
"It's based on getting the distribution deal we've always envisioned that allows the group to 'sign themselves' to their own company and keep their masters. They will have 100% creative control of all aspects of their music, art, and release schedule with no 3rd party participation in outside business," manager Chris Clancy said. "Freedom and ownership was the whole point. Red and Sony know that its in everyone's best interest to maintain the group's authenticity and control. They built it, they deserve it. There's no cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works.. It's about to be fun.. and different.. " (Rap Radar)
A few days ago, Havoc hinted at plans to break the record deal news sooner than later.
Mobb Deep say they are just a few days away from announcing their new record deal and a few months away from putting out a new album. "Hopefully if not [this year], early next year," Havoc told XXLMag.com when asked when him and Prodigy's next LP would be released. In the meantime, the duo will be dropping off a gift strictly for the streets. "We're gonna be doing a mixtape and stuff like that," added. "We're gonna be dropping a new song in a few days. It's gonna be nice!" (XXL Mag)
Earlier the same week, group member Prodigy said his aim was to drop a new LP in the next few months.
"We'll be dropping the single for the [new] album soon," P said in an interview with Bootleg Kev. "That's the only thing we're focusing on right now, the Mobb Deep album -- it'll be [available] before the new year. We ain't letting nothing out the bag [with features] - just know, it's that hard sh*t...[Alchemist], Havoc, the home team, you know? Mobb Deep, you know how we always do it." (Bootleg Kev)
Recently, Hav hit up SOHH to discuss how the LP could be released.
"I'm all about getting into any situation that makes money, you understand what I'm saying," Hav told SOHH when asked if Mobb Deep is headed indie. "So I wouldn't just be like, 'Oh no, indie is this and major is that.' You can sign to an indie and it could wind up being structured like a major deal and you won't make any money, any way. Artists beware. People are quick to say, 'Oh yeah, I'm doing indie.' If the deal's not structured right, it could get structured just like a major and you won't see no f*cking bread. I'm into getting into anything that makes money." (SOHH)
An exact release date for Mobb Deep's new album has not yet been given.
