As the days inch closer to his long-awaited Cole World: The Sideline Story debut album, J. Cole has offered his take on how he feels the LP will stand the test of time.
Asked to describe his debut in one word, Cole compared its timeless feature to Jay-Z's 2001 platinum album, The Blueprint.
"Timeless. I feel like six months from now, one year from now, two, three years from now, it'll give you the same feeling. It's got a feeling, it's got a sound to it," Cole said in an interview. "Like The Blueprint. I'm not saying it sounds like Blueprint -- I'm saying I can throw the album in at any time and I'll know what it's going to sound like and how it's going to feel. Like it's one of those. But only time can tell." (Fly Times Daily)
Last week, Cole opened up about snagging Jay-Z for his "Mr. Nice Watch" collaboration.
"I knew Jay was gonna be on [that song]. I knew he was going to do that. I knew as soon as we made it [like] 'Watch Jay get on this,'" Cole said in an interview. "Everything worked out, I'm a true believer that everything happens for a reason. Like, when he did that, it made way more sense than my song. It's a bigger record, a more universal record -- Being the hip-hop nerd that I am, I would have loved to hear Jay-Z on that ['God's Gift'] beat. But really, I'm fine on that song alone." (VIBE)
Last month, a tracklisting leaked online showing Jay's presence, although it had not been confirmed by Cole at the time.
1. "Intro" 2. "Dollar and a Dream III" 3. "Can't Get Enough" feat. Trey Songz 4. "Lights Please" 5. "Interlude" 6. "Mr. Nice Watch" feat. Jay-Z 7. "Cole World" 8. "In the Morning" feat. Drake 9. "Lost Ones" 10. "Nobody's Perfect" feat. Missy Elliott 11. "Never Told" (prod. by No I.D.) 12. "Rise and Shine" 13. "God's Gift" 14. "Breakdown" 15. "Cheer Up" (Cole World: The Sideline Story)
Slated to drop next week, Cole previously said his delayed album would come out no later than this month.
"I'm trying to find ways to word it without sounding overly egotistical, and I want to remain humble, but also let people know it's actually (really) incredible," Cole said about the new LP. "I'm sitting on gold, man. I don't wanna speak it up too much but I'm super confident in it. I'm super proud." The album is due "absolutely no later than September," says Cole, who's been reticent to release an album title or date until both are set in stone. (Detroit News)
Cole World: The Sideline Story is slated to drop Tuesday, September 27th.
