[SOHH highlights a single each week and offers a unique look at the song. After East Coast spitter J-EyE tells listeners why "This Goes Out" to all of those who choose to stand tall, Roc Nation artist J. Cole informs readers on how the single "Work Out" didn't require much work at all.]
It's not too much story behind that track "Work Out" man. I was in a hotel room when I heard the sample ... and from there, I made the beat and came up with the hook in the hotel room. Got back to New York and recorded it.
The Paula Abdul part came to me when I was in the studio ... I kinda just instantly laid it one there. There really wasn't too much thought. It sounded like summertime. It sounded like fun. Know what I'm sayin'?
It felt really good at the time. I needed a single -- I needed a movement for the album. So you know ... that was the one.
It's a good feelin' [hearing the song on the radio] ... I kinda went through it already with "Who Dat" and "All I Want Is You". I don't get to listen to the radio a lot cause I be on tour, but any time I hear my song on the radio it feels good.
I hear out in L.A. they're playing it every minute, so I feel blessed anytime anyone is playing my song.
J. Cole is a RocNation MC from Fayetteville, North Carolina. After releasing a slew of critically-acclaimed mixtapes, his debut album "Cole Wold: A Sideline Story" will be released later this month.
