[With this week's new release of their 3rd 1st Impression mixtape, DJ Stimulus dishes out the inside scoop on his hip-hop meets jazz project alongside renowned drummer Chris Dave.]

I've known Chris Dave for many, many years. Chris actually played the drums at my first album release party with a live band. We've been friends for a long time just because we roll with the whole jazz, hip-hop set. We met years and years and years ago.

Back in 2007, Chris was having a birthday party and it was around the time he was touring with Mos Def alot. He hit me up and was like, "Yo, I want you to come and rock at my birthday show." I get down there and he was like, "You're going to get on there for the fourth or fifth song." When I had got down there, Mos had got tied up and he couldn't come anymore because of something. So he was like, "We need you to lead the show now since Mos can't come out." I ended up jumping onstage and that was that.

Soon after that, I was heading into the hospital to have a kidney transplant. But before I went in, I sent Chris a whole bunch of A capellas and stuff like that. I sent him a whole bunch of A capellas and songs and just left it with him. When I got out of the office, I was able to meet and greet some people. Then a couple months later, he came and told me, "It was dope. I made a bunch of records out of them."

So the reason it's called 3rd First Impression is because for both of us, even though we've dropped a decent amount of stuff, we're like the underdogs. They don't see us in the spotlight although we've worked with a lot of people that are in the spotlight.

You may have seen us and got an impression of us before but not necessarily this one. So this is the impression that we want to give to you and for you to keep. People may know Chris as a jazz drummer or the drummer for Mos Def, but aren't very up on the fact that he's very well known as a producer.

The same is applied to me. I've had some tracks come out before when I was an emcee but over the last few years, I've done a lot more as a deejay and traveled as a deejay.

This all came together very organic. We have been friends for a very long time and he invited me out to his show and then we decided to do some more stuff together. But then as I was headed to the hospital, I sent him the A capellas and then when I got out, we got back together and started recording a bunch of these.

I'm really excited to hear what people think of it. Our primary goal was to make this a wake-up call. We recorded a lot of material and this is what we're letting out there to let people know what's up. Nothing is confirmed yet but we're working really hard on having the other pieces of work we've recorded brought to the light and to the public.
