Rapper-turned-actor Common has come forward to stand by his decision to unveil the personal details behind his romantic relationships in the past, most notably with singer Erykah Badu and tennis superstar Serena Williams, in an autobiography set for release.
According to Common, his memoirs, entitled One Day It'll All Make Sense, holds no bars on discussing all aspects of his life, even his love affairs.
"I feel like this is the medium to do it," Common said in an interview. "When I'm in a relationship, I'm not going to parade that relationship. It's not for public consumption. It's my life. But when I'm talking about things that happened in the past, this is perfect for me...The stories I'm telling are not only to entertain," he continued, "but they're there to inspire and to relate to and to say, 'Man, this guy is not perfect, this guy been through some of the same things I've been through and he just decided to make some choices and is doing well. But he's still a work in progress." (Chicago Tribune)
Earlier this month, the music veteran discussed Badu's decision to end their relationship during the early 2000's.
"She handed it to me. I was in my hotel room on tour and -- she called me and was like, 'Hey, I don't wanna be in this relationship no more. I'm liking somebody else,'" Common revealed. "That was my first love and my first heartbreak...It taught me a lot of things, and when it happened I kinda really got into myself and really learned about myself and I was able to move on, and now me and E is real cool." A few years after the break-up, Common reportedly shared an on-again, off-again romance with Serena Williams.
Serena Williams and rapper Common have had an off-and-on relationship for a couple of years. Despite Common saying he planned to get married back in May (though not specifically to Serena), the couple split later in the month. Serena explained that Common's demanding schedule made it tough for him to maintain their relationship. Well, only a few months later it seems like the two could not live without one another. Prior to his autobiography's release, the Chicago poetic emcee gave a few reasons for why he wanted to open up about his life as a whole.
"I was opposed to it even when the idea was mentioned to me. I didn't think I was at a place in my life or career where I could write a book and have something to say. But I thought about it when my manager talked to me about what the perspective of the book could be. It's about the relationship with my mother and the type of human being I'm growing to be and how I want to pass that on to other people, including the people I love." (In Reads)
