[With this week's release of the compilation album 24 Hour Karate School 2, veteran producer Ski Beatz reflects on creating Bronx duo Camp Lo's big hit -- "Luchini (This Is It)" from the critically acclaimed album, Uptown Saturday Night.]
This was like '96 or '97.
Camp Lo's [album] Uptown Saturday Night was done, but the label, Profile Records, was like, "Yo. We love the album but it doesn't have a big record. It needs a big single."
I wanted to come up with something that was exciting, When you say "Luchini", the first thing that comes to mind is The Bronx. Sedgwick Ave. That's where I made that beat. I was diggin' in the crates, looking for something that was bright ... we just needed one more record to take it to the label.
I dug up that Dynasty sample from the song "Adventures in the Land of Music" and boom-- everything just clicked.
I didn't have to do too much work. I chopped it a little, threw some drums on it ... messed with those little piano riffs and came up with the hook. Camp Lo came in (the studio was in my house) and as soon as they heard the beat, it was love. You know? There was just a vibe about it.
When we went to [the official] studio to lay it down, the sound quality and everything [sounded] a million times better and that was when you could really feel and hear what was about to happen with that record.
I remember making the record then the next day going with Camp Lo to do a show. All we talked about was "Luchini" and how we couldn't wait for it to come out. We knew it was gonna be crazy. It was just one of those kinda things.
