[SOHH highlights a newly-released single each week and offers a unique look at the song. After Waka Flocka Flame explained "She Be Puttin' On", Kurupt explains why he chose to play double-duty as executive producer and rapper on his latest track, "Samaryda".]

The main purpose of an executive producer is to bring everything to the table and oversee the whole thing; I wanted to executive produce [my new album, The Academy] and take it to a whole 'nother place. Basically what I did was bring the distribution and the funding to the table, as well as picked each record with M80 and put all the guest verses where we wanted them to be.

It was a pleasure for me to jump into a deal like this because the [linuep] is immaculate. We got Pete Rock, Crooked I, Jadakiss, Styles P., Meth and Red ... even got the Midwest in there. Royce Da 5'9 stepped in like, "Yo, don't forget about us."

Recording "Samaryda" with Raekwon and Kojoe was so exciting. I'm a fan of Raekwon, personally ... always been a fan of the Wu. I've done with with Meth and Inspectah Deck but I've never done a record with Rae. So when M80 came to me about this record, I just lit up.
Me and Rae on one record ... that's just the sh*t to me.

What I like about it is that its hardcore, raw hip-hop.This ain't about makin' a hit record or makin' 'em boogie. We tryna show our skills, my n*gga. And that's what I love most.
No disrepect to anybody: But everybody you hear on on this record, this is our way of having fun. But me M80 and Terminal 3 felt like we needed to go against the grain and put out a record that we like, which is pure unadulterated Hip Hop.

When I look at this record, I look at my album, Kuruption, where I took the East and the West coast and mixed it in the melting part. With Kuruption I had the East Coast on one side and the West on another.

With The Academy, we put them all together as one.

Born in Philadelphia, Kurupt grew up in California where, along with Daz Dillinger, he formed the West Coast group Dogg Pound. The former Death Row artist has collaborated with Tupac, Snoop Dogg, and others. Aside from music, his film roles include Half Past Dead and The Wash. He most recently served as Executive Producer on the album "The Academy", in stores September 13th.
