[One For All: This week, SOHH pays homage to New York hip-hop group Brand Nubian by featuring an entertainment personality to name who they feel is the most underrated lyricist in that set. After Mickey Factz named Killa Sin last week, Run-DMC's DMC crowns Grand Puba as SOHH Underrated.]
I was just doing an interview the other day and I was like, "Yo, y'all better stop sleeping on Grand Puba!" Listen, he put out a solo album like a year ago. Grand Puba is like Andre 3000. Every time he kicks a verse, it's never wack.
Puba, to this day, is better than 98% of the [rappers who debuted] in the last 15 years. Collectively, they always talk about the greatest albums in hip-hop. That Brand Nubian album was one of the Top 5 greatest albums in hip-hop.
The reason why I say Puba's really slept on is because people look at different success and notoriety but they don't look at a guy's work. They don't look at the quality, but the quantity, [figuring], "Oh, he's in the sneaker business. Oh, he's doing movies." F*ck all of that. It has nothing to do with the art. Puba is better than, matter of fact, he's top five of all time, in my book. And don't get me wrong, it's all opinion.
Run-D.M.C. were an American hip hop group from Hollis, in the Queens borough of New York City. Founded by Joseph "Run" Simmons, Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels, and Jason "Jam-Master Jay" Mizell, the group is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture.
