[SOHH highlights a single each week and offers a unique look at the song. After Slim Thug and Boss Hogg members Dre Day and J-Dawg dissected their Houston anthem "What Up", SOHH True Grit contest winner #7 Wordsmith tells listeners why "Show Me the Money" is still the phrase that pays.]

My story is a little different than most. I was born in Germany; my pops was in the Army. I've lived in New York but it wasn't 'til we moved back to Germany for a second time that I really got into Hip Hop.

I was a Hip Hop junkie after that.

For the True Grit mixtape, I gave y'all a joint called "Show Me the Money" that Benny Rome produced. Shotout to Boom, who's worked with Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman and guys like that. He had never really worked with somebody like me, so we were both sorta expanding together. So when I did the track he was just like, "Whoa!"

I think that's a good thing. Artists should mix up [the North and South sounds] and put some East Coast lyrics over a Down South beat. Maybe put some Southern rappers on some old school beats and see what they do with it.

I know people saw the title and probably was like, "Aw man, this is another one of those records where [the artist] is talkin' about money." Which I don't do -- but if you listen to it, it's about showin' people hard work, the grind and sacrifice. Just puttin' in that work.

So it's more like "Show Me the Money" cuz I'm working really hard.

I had the double-time flow on this track, but I wanted to make sure my words and I what I was talkin' about still make sense. This is more of a commercial record for me, but I still put a concept behind it. I want people to know when you hear a Wordsmith track, [there's] gonna be some kind of content to it.

Hailing straight outta Baltimore, Maryland, Wordsmith began rapping at a young age and is just one of the 20 winners of our True Grit contest.
