[In honor of today marking Pete Rock's 41st birthday, super producer Swizz Beatz reflects on the impact the renowned hitmaker's contributions have had on his music.]
Big shout-outs to Pete Rock. I [lived] in Mount Vernon [, New York] for a little bit of time and it was all about Pete Rock, Spunk Bigga and all those producers from back in the days.
I used to love [when] Pete Rock [put] those instrumentals in the middle of the album. It really influenced me to put the whole instrumental on the Haute Living album. Everybody wanted to rap on [the instrumental], but I said, 'You know what? I'm a producer so I can get away with [this].' I knew I could get away with putting an instrumental on the album.
That's what Pete Rock used to do back in the days, so I really have to give him a big shout-out. DJ Premier also had a big influence on my music but today we're here talking about Pete Rock.
Swizz Beatz is a producer, DJ, rapper and painter. At the age of 17, he gained attention in the hip-hop world through his friendship with rapper DMX. Grady Spivey and rapper Cassidy helped launch his label Full Surface Records. He is also the Creative Director over at Reebok.
