[SOHH features a new entertainment personality each week to speak on who they feel is the most underrated artist. After Fred the Godson gave Joe Budden the title earlier this week, "The (White) Rapper Show" alumni Persia crowns Joell Ortiz SOHH Underrated.]
Joell Ortiz is the most underrated rapper in my opinion. For one, I think the industry relies a lot on skin tone. I feel like they don't give him enough of what he's worth because he's Spanish. That's [the] first thing.
I think he gets looked at as underrated because he's too lyrical. Sometimes when you're too lyrical, they don't give you enough credit. Or else they give you so much credit that they forget about you.
I don't really see race when I look at rappers, so I never really got the whole Big Pun comparison thing. He's Spanish, but to me there's different types of Spanish. He's not that type of Spanish to me. People tell me, "You're not white." Everybody calls me "the black girl". He's not that Spanish to me. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the way he sounds, his delivery but I don't see him as a "Spanish rapper."
I just don't get that vibe from him. When I listen to Joell Ortiz, I get straight rap.
Persia is most known for her stint on Egotrip's "The (White) Rapper Show" which ran from January to February of 2007. The show featured 10 Caucasian rappers competing for a $100,000 grand prize. After making it to the sixth episode before elimination, Persia took her experience and began her own venture into the music business by releasing multiple records. She is currently working on a new mixtape entitled, The Truth.
