Former Bad Boy Records artist Shyne has shared his input on the state of hip-hop and why hip-hop stars like Drake have fallen on his radar as of late.
In Shyne's eyes, Drizzy's ability to sing makes him more than your average rapper.
"I think the Drake kid has serious potential to go down in the history of rap," Shyne explained in an interview. "I definitely get inspired. He's not really a rapper. He's a musician, you dig? He sings and he makes great music. I'm inspired by what he does...Most of the people I interact with are honest people. They are who they are. Drake is a kid that says 'Listen, I'm not from the streets. I'm just making good music.' Kanye's a dude that doesn't try to be anything other than who he is. [Lil] Wayne is really off the block...All the kids I respect and admire are truthful people. I like the kid Lupe Fiasco. I think he's extraordinary. I'm really about truth, man. If you're being honest and you have integrity, I'm all for you." (Superstar Radio)
Despite Drake's singing talent, he previously spoke on not feeling confident enough to give up rapping for an R&B career.
"I could never really take singing on the road the way I can take rapping on the road. I can't get on stage and blow people away with my range and vocals. I'm a studio singer because I can convey emotion and I have unique melodies, so that's kind of what I pride myself on, but that's where it stops. I make music more for people to listen to rather than to hold me as an R&B artist. Not to wish that I couldn't sing better. If I could sing like Trey [Songz] then yeah, I'd definitely just want to be a singer. If I could do anything, trust me, I wish I could just sit at the piano and sing." (VIBE)
Last year, Shyne told SOHH he hoped to collaborate with artists ranging from Jay-Z to Rihanna.
"I definitely want to collaborate with Baby, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane," Shyne revealed to SOHH. "I'd also want to record with Usher, Rihanna, there's a few people that I'm jacking their style, definitely. Obviously Jay-Z is always somebody you'd like to do a record with." (SOHH)
He also revealed his close knit relationship with Cash Money Records' co-founder Baby.
"Me and Baby have had a longstanding relationship for over 10 years, since I've been out in the streets," Shyne added. "I've known him from way back then. We just kept that relationship. When I was in the pen, he got at me. When I got out the pen, he got at me. He's always been one of those O.G.'s that always stood tall and do what people from the block do. That's just what he does, he's just a good dude. So it's inevitable that we keep that connection." (SOHH)
