[With tomorrow's release of Can You Dig It, Coalmine Records CEO Matt Diamond breaks down the Top 5 reasons you should cop his indie label's compilation album.]
1. True Grit
I would say the first reason people should go out and get it is because it's dope hip-hop. It's that raw, it's that gritty hip-hop that seems to be fading out but as long as I'm here and other labels are still doing their thing with this brand and style of East Coast boom bap, it's going to stick around forever. You gotta support the culture, the real hip-hop.
2. Record Appreciation Day
This project is what I call an ode to the single. This kind of takes you back to the record store days where kids were buying albums and dope records and really appreciating music for what it is. Not necessarily with having to be onboard with the whole artist's movement. If you liked the song, you bought the record. So it's a collection of singles. It's back to the single.
3. Fully Loaded
There's so much talent on here. The project shows such a wide range of artists. You have the veterans like C.L. Smooth and Inspectah Deck and then you have younger guys who have come into the game and really laid things down like Skyzoo and a guy like Bekay. It crosses the gap from the older generation of hip-hop to the younger generation of hip-hop. So it pleases everybody.
4. We Need Love Too
Another reason would be to support the indie label. The majors shouldn't be getting all of the paper so try something new out that might not be getting the same type of exposure as all of these major projects that have huge budgets and that are funded. Keep your eyes and ears open to something new. That's what music is all about. It's to listen to something new and not co-sign a certain trend. Music is pretty much trend-free. Keep it real and try some new music. Support the indie label because there's not many of us left. Everyone is so obsessed with trying to sign to a major but what about the independent movement? That's what Coalmine Records is and that's what we've been. We're not trying to get signed by a major. We are what we are. That's where we are so support your indie label.
5. Master Of The Beats
Another reason to get this is because the album production and guest features are dope. One of my favorite tracks on the album is called "The Raw". I put myself on there as a deejay with my moniker, "DJ Dutchmaster". My next favorite record is "Perfect Timing" with C.L. Smooth and Skyzoo. I feel that record is a classic and both artists do a great job of bridging the generation gap. I also love Bekay's single "I Am", produced by The Alchemist and featuring DJ Revolution, was amazing to work with such talent..
