SOHH teamed up with ReverbNation to select 20 unsigned rappers with "True Grit" --that rough, authentic swagger and determination to win at all costs. After weeks of deliberations and debates reviewing hundreds of worthy (and simply wack) contenders, the SOHH.com team countsdown the top 20 grittiest rappers on ReverbNation with a hustle so hard and rhymes so raw, they can't go unnoticed.
The SOHH True Grit Artist #7, "WORDSMITH", BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
You love to hear the story, again and again, about some rap newcomer who is primed to win? Right? Well, then look no further than Wordsmith, a rapper who puts the M-C in emcee. Hailing straight outta Baltimore, Maryland, this rhyme slinger is far from your average microphone fiend.Wordsmith may be sly with his words and hide his true feelings behind catchy metaphors, but you'll agree that his pen game supports his pen name.
Wordsmith's gritty work ethic has already garned him a co-sign from rap pioneer Chubb Rock, collaborating in 2009 for their "Bridging The Gap" track. He's also locked in various licensing deals with companies like Nintendo and CBS. However, you'll notice that the accolades and props haven't gone to his head, as he makes clear on "As the Art Fades Away" ("So sad when a rapper gets richer/Get them the fame, make money be the scripture/Love of the game fade like an old picture/You a boss? Your boys call you Mr.?/Let me make it real clear for you cats/If the pioneers never rapped, y'all wouldn't make crap!"). Flashy rappers, beware -- he'll shoot you down to size then show you how to do this, son, as he promises on the rousing guitar-driven track, "Rock The Crowd". Class is in session.
Bottom line? Wordsmith will always be a step ahead of his competition, and may possibly get the last word in the end.
