SOHH teamed up with ReverbNation to select 20 unsigned rappers with "True Grit" --that rough, authentic swagger and determination to win at all costs. After weeks of deliberations and debates reviewing hundreds of worthy (and simply wack) contenders, the SOHH.com team countsdown the top 20 grittiest rappers on ReverbNation with a hustle so hard and rhymes so raw, they can't go unnoticed.
The SOHH True Grit Artist #17: "TY BRU", ASHEBORO, NORTH CAROLINA
Saddle up for the next artist on SOHH's "True Grit" Top 20 list as we buckle on down to Asheboro, North Carolina for Ty Bru. Don't let his baggy pants and shades fool you though, this rapper ain't all that meets the eyes. Running things as an indie artist for a decade and holding on to his 2005 Appalachian State University graduation certificate with degrees in International Business, Communication, Marketing Journalism and Management, his hustle is on a higher level than most emcees -- literally.
It's Ty's ability to rub up on rap as someone with a grit that's deeper than raw rhymes. His rap hustle has allowed this feller to travel to Europe, hitting France, Ireland, Switzerland, England and a bunch of other countries the average Joe can't even pronounce. Even if you tied a lasso to this rap spittin' boy you couldn't stop him from having performed on live stages next to Chuck D, Andre 3000, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Bubba Sparxxx and the Ying Yang Twinz.
He's also got a posse over 3,000 deep on MySpace and although his fan demographic of fans spills into the over-40 generation, this ain't no easy listenin' music. Check him wax gritty on tracks like "Brown Bag", where he demonstrates that he's not the one to spar with (You got my money, bring it to me in the brown bag/You got my 40 oz, put it in the brown bag/I split the dutch, spill the guts in the brown bag/It's Ty Bru, and Phillie Phresh/80 Ruger, straight through your bulletproof vest/Expect nothing less, than a couple of boots to the chest/We better than the best/Ain't got no time to be waiting on the rest/I used to push pills and narcotics like CVS!).
Performing almost on a weekly basis, you can catch this fella unleashing his wrath with shows booked all the way to June. His buzz is growing fast, like the winds of a Dusty Bowl tornado. With Petey Pablo's current legal woes and Little Brother indefinitely split, it's time to pave way for some fresh NC blood. No College Dropout here.
Check back tomorrow for SOHH True Grit Artist #16.
