SOHH teamed up with ReverbNation to select 20 unsigned rappers with "True Grit" --that rough, authentic swagger and determination to win at all costs. After weeks of deliberations and debates reviewing hundreds of worthy (and simply wack) contenders, the SOHH.com team countsdown the top 20 grittiest rappers on ReverbNation with a hustle so hard and rhymes so raw, they can't go unnoticed.
The SOHH True Grit Artist #10, "FUZE THE MC", WASHINGTON, DC
We've now begun counting down the Top 10 artists of our contest -- the grittiest of the gritty. To start things off, what do you get when you rattle up smarts, dope lyrics amplified by a raspy, quickfire staccato? Look no further than the Chocolate City's own Fuze the MC.
With co-signs from Big Boi and Blu and currently a student saddled into a full academic scholarship to Howard University, it's a safe bet that Fuze has used his smarts to elevate himself over the competition. He's getting his buzz up as well, with over, 3,400 Facebook fans and 1,500-plus MySpace supporters. Think twice before you tell him to hit the road -- Fuze has been featured on various, reputable hip-hop publications, and has an album set to drop. Naysayers beware: "stand clear -- [he's] a Vortex!"
Fuze's grit lies in his melodic braggadocio, as he puts all listeners up on his dope game. The proof is in the pudding, as heard on "I Run This" (Rate me 1-10/well, 1-10, I've been a 10/scratch them, I'm platinum/I'm still getting benefits..."). The MC has lines that go even further for the guttural kill, like, "My flow is on point, you will not survive/It's like swimming in a Speedo in a pool of knives!".
Modernizing the spirit of Golden Era LL Cool J mixed with Lupe Fiasco's style, this young gunner paving his way to the top. Make way, Wale, there's another newcomer in the game looking to put on for his city. Or, in his words, "I'm that dude-- but who are you?"
