SOHH teamed up with ReverbNation to select 20 unsigned rappers with "True Grit" --that rough, authentic swagger and determination to win at all costs. After weeks of deliberations and debates reviewing hundreds of worthy (and simply wack) contenders, the SOHH.com team countsdown the top 20 grittiest rappers on ReverbNation with a hustle so hard and rhymes so raw, they can't go unnoticed.
The SOHH True Grit Artist #20: "CKG," CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Hailing from the mean, windy streets of Chicago, CKG encompasses what "True Grit" is all about. From rapper to producer to video director, this rhyme spitter is making steady moves to etch out his place in the ever-changing rap game.
If you don't believe it, just ask one of his 6,000-plus Myspace fans. And wth a feature in Ozone Magazine, plus a nod from the LA Music Awards as "Hip-Hop Artist of the Year", CKG proves his mass appeal extends way beyond "the magnificent mile."
CKG caught SOHH.com's ears with a flow that goes from nice to nasty quicker than a gunslinger's draw. You might catch him sweet-talking ladies on "Bedroom", but his rhymes on tracks like "I Gotta Get It" (I don't give a f*ck how your mot herf*cking swag is/fact is, I am the truth, y'all actors/I'm hip-hop, y'all b*stards) and "I Came Up" (What I spit's adjacent/patiently waiting like 50 & Em, somebody get me to them/Boom, boom/somebody get me to Tim/pop, R&B and pop, somebody get me a pen/I write and produce anything, keep the thugs & the ladies laced/I'm the '09 Babyface) prove he's out to be hip-hop's new renaissance man.
With artists like Kanye West and Common blazing the path, Chi-town is due a new sheriff in town and CKG is in line to inherit the wind.
Check back tomorrow for SOHH's True Grit artist #19.
