G-Unit member Lloyd Banks recently discussed the burgeoning emcees that are on his radar and which ones he's checking for in 2011.
According to Banks, Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole, Nipsey Hu$$le and Jay Electronica have caught his attention.
"I like Wiz Khalifa," Banks revealed in an interview. "I wanna see what he's gonna do as far as his solo album...He brought the heir with the ['Black & Yellow'] remix with Snoop [Dogg] and Juicy J. That was dope so I want to see how he brings that into the new year. Nipsey Hu$$le also. I'm a big fan of what he does. Music is dope...I've been up on J. Cole for a minute. I had a chance to listen to some of his music before he actually did the deal over there with [Jay-Z's Roc Nation.] So I was hip to him before he came -- Jay [Electronica] is dope. He drops like 'Exhibit A' through 'Z' [laughs]. All dope. Shout-out to Just Blaze too. I think he did most of them if not all." (Los Angeles Leakers)
Last October, Banks discussed rap newcomers and longevity in rap.
"There's a lot of new artists out there," Banks said in an interview. "Wiz Khalifa, I like what he's doing. He's consistent, he's putting out a lot of material. J. Cole is dope, I was just listening to a new record he put out yesterday and he's a producer too so he's putting the beats together. He's already got a one up and he didn't even drop his first album yet. Curren$y. He's not new but I look at consistency because it doesn't matter when you come in the game. Some artists, you can come in the game and sell five million records. I respect longevity and consistency because some things you could just be blind to. You can cut the Internet on and keep seeing this name and seeing this name but be blind to it and don't acknowledge until it blew out the pocket already. But it's OK, I think that's the science. We're in a time where you control TV." (Rap-Up)
This week, G.O.O.D. Music's Big Sean named the new artists he envisions on XXL Magazine's upcoming Freshmen '11 cover.
"My advice to the 2011 [XXL] Freshmen class is just use it to your advantage, man. Don't be lazy, get off your a**. That's the biggest. When you're a rapper and on the come-up, you dream about having a platinum record. You dream about -- getting signed, you dream about being on the covers of magazines, so that's one of the biggest accomplishments of all-time, of my life. So man, take that sh*t for what it is. Do what it do, man. You earn that sh*t so congratulations...If I could nominate 2011 [XXL Freshmen], it would be Chip Tha Ripper, Kendrick Lamar, SayItAintTone, a whole bunch of people."
