Known for being savvy in music business, Duck Down Records' co-founder/rapper Buckshot Shorty recently talked to SOHH and revealed the industry moguls that inspired his expertise.
Within Buck's list, the Boot Camp Clik member pointed out late Priority Records owner Bryan Turner was at the top of his list.
"One guy I would say I was really, really cool with was the owner of Priority Records, a big tool and inspiration to me. His name was Bryan Turner. Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and all of those guys would know who he is. He's the guy who started Priority Records. He's one. Believe it or not, Walter Yetnikoff who was actually the owner of CBS Entertainment that started years and ages ago, but his negative way of doing things, it inspired me not to go down that route. He was a business great [though]." (SOHH)
He also named other executives who helped inspire Duck Down's decade-long running label.
"The last would be, man, it's actually a few," Buck added. "I would have to name Stu Fine who owned Wild Pitch Records because one day I said I wanted to own my own record label and I used to follow a lot of stuff Stu Fine did. He was the owner of that record label. And that's it. Actually, no, Art Yeager. He's the guy who made it all happen for me. As far as me actually creating my own label. Art Yeager is the guy that actually helped us bring Duck Down to Priority Records." (SOHH)
Buck previously talked to SOHH about his new music industry-inspired book, Common Knowledgy of the Entertainment Industry.
"In the book, I show the steps that led up to what made Buckshot and I think very few people actually knew, so I got to put it out on a map. I started out as an intern for S.O.U.L./MCA Records. It's very important to put both of them into play. S.O.U.L. was an independently distributed label by [The Bomb Squad producer] Hank Shocklee and MCA Records, which was a major record label. So you can't move one without the other because this is how I was put on to independent and major. I went from being an intern at S.O.U.L. to being an artist with [acquired] knowledge and I took my information and understanding and I created more of a source for Black Moon, which became part of hip-hop history by getting signed to an independent label."
