Southern rapper Paul Wall has revealed taking part in massive weight loss surgery and the aftermath of losing more than 100 pounds.
Wall's decision to get the surgery done came at the heels of outside influences pointing out his weight.
"Honestly, when we were in Afghanistan and [reps for VH1's] Celebrity Fit Club were contacting [me] about coming on the show, that was a h*ll of a wake-up call," Wall said in an interview. "[Being fat] isn't a secret. You can look in the mirror and try to hide it and cover it up, and it may work here or there, but there ain't no shirt or hat you can put on or haircut you can get to hide the fact that you're morbidly obese. That's what the doctor said: I was 'morbidly obese.' I decided not to do [the show] but it was still a wake-up call to have people calling you saying, 'Hey, you're really, really fat.'" The Houston-based rapper also reflected on getting gastric sleeve surgery and why losing so much weight was vital.
"I feel like I got my life back," Wall added. "When you're so big like that, it's embarrassing. I didn't want to go out and be seen. I felt uncomfortable because I'm not used to being that big. People would see me and say something about it, because it was no secret. I was morbidly obese, 120 pounds overweight. It was just embarrassing. I'd be on stage feeling like I was about to collapse. I'd get dizzy spells. I'd be on the airplane and have to ask for seatbelt extensions. Once you go up in the air, it's really hard to breathe. I was just thinking, 'What if I have a heart attack?' I want to be here for my kids. I don't want to have a heart attack. My son is four and my daughter is two and a half. The doctor told me that when you're 50 pounds overweight, it takes 15 years off your life. So it literally saved my life." (Ozone Magazine)
Last spring, 50 Cent lost over 50 pounds for a movie role.
"[Things Fall Apart] is about a Heisman hopeful who could possibly be going to the league and everyone is assuming he's gonna make it and then he's hit with an illness," 50 explained in an interview. "I had a friend of mine who actually experienced cancer and it's what motivated me to write this screenplay. You don't have to make everything personal, but that project was. That's why I committed to playing a role where I lost 54 pounds. I had to discipline myself enough until I achieved it but... I got it. (Cleveland News)
Personal celebrity trainer Mark Jenkins previously talked with SOHH about how artists like 50 and Wall could pack on pounds after losing massive weight loss.
"The best way to regain weight is to do it slowly because you don't want to put that weight on as fat, you want to put it on as muscle and you just put your body through a starvation mode so any food you eat, your body is gonna wanna convert it into fat because you've been starving it. You want to give yourself a good amount of time and eat healthy, you don't want to get a lot of fat so stack up your calories on your healthy food, because when you go from nothing to a lot of food it could complicate your intestinal tract."
