Former Roc-A-Fella artist Young Chris has weighed in his thoughts on Jay-Z's recent Roc Nation success weeks after announcing the addition of Rihanna, Sean Garrett and Jay Electronica to the entertainment company's roster.
Admitting being in awe of Jay's business moves, Chris also co-signed Hov's decision to add Wale and J. Cole to the roster last year.
"I love it, I love it. I'm excited for him. Followed the format, of course. J. Cole is a good friend of mine. When I first met him I was like "Dude is down to earth." We met in North Carolina on the Attention Deficit Tour. He came out with Wale. It was the first time I seen him perform, and it was him hometown and he got a lot of love there. I performed with him at the Hot 97 show. He had a showcase at SOB's. We got a record together, and we performed that. He's a good dude man; I like everything he doing right now. I like how everything is going; I like it, I like it a lot. I actually did a whole tour with Wale; I did the Attention Deficit Tour with him a year ago." (All Hip Hop)
Last year, Chris explained why he did not join Hov's Roc Nation army.
"That's my man, that's my man," Chris said in an interview. "I spoke with Jay the other day, not on the phone, over e-mail. It was in his contract when he left the label Def Jam, he couldn't take none of us with him, no artists with him, so that explains why I'm not signed to Roc Nation right now. But that's my man. When we see each other, we might talk about the music sh*t, but at the end of the day he's asking about the boys, how the fam, how the people's doing back in the city. What's up with him, what's up with that. I'm asking him for direction. We always been [good] -- same relationship as before." (Culture VI)
Earlier this month, Roc Nation's buzz heightened after Jay-Z announced the signing of Jay Electronica.
Another "Jay" has been added to the Roc Nation roster. It was announced yesterday (Nov. 12) that New Orleans rapper Jay Electronica signed with Jay-Z's personal imprint, joining acts J. Cole and Willow Smith at the recently formed label. And to celebrate, Jay-Z threw a lavish party at New York club The Box that neither Jay E, nor anyone else in attendance, would soon forget. The event -- which kicked off at about 10:15 pm and drew head-turning guests like Beyonce and Omarion -- was a three-ring circus that included sexy burlesque dancers, an aerial gymnast, a Russian hula-hoop master and a girl whose "talent" was having men shoot arrows at balloons that were strategically positioned over her privates. The deal sparked a positive fuse in Roc Nation's J. Cole who shared his reaction to gaining a new labelmate.
"Jay Electronica is such a monster. He's one of the few dudes that I hear rap in the game that makes me want to step my bars up." Coles adds. The two MCs appeared together on the lyrical "Just Begun," off Reflection Eternal's Revolutions Per Minute LP. "There is no back seat. Everybody has their own lane. He has the freedom to do what he does. We're not on each other's toes. If anything we only help each other." (VIBE)
