Southern rapper Soulja Boy Tell Em has discussed what his career goals are and how important it is to be awarded for contributions made to hip-hop.
Soulja Boy also admits he does not want to bury himself in complex lyricism.
In XXL's November 2010 issue, on stands now, SB tells us he has grown as an MC. "I can't keep playin' around, because if you keep playin' around, people are gonna think you're a joke," he said in the piece, written by contributor Matt Barone. "At some point, you have to get serious." But don't get it twisted, Soulja doesn't wanna be the next Lupe Fiasco. "I don't want to be super-Lupe-Fiasco-lyrical and n*ggas don't know what the f*ck I'm talking about," he added. "I want to be the best," he continued. "I want to be recognized in that category where I'm nominated for Best Rapper with Jay-Z and Kanye and Wayne. I wanna get a Grammy. I want Best Rap Album of the Year... I've made millions of dollars off of doing my style, but, hey, I can rap, too." (XXL Mag)
The rapper's upcoming DeAndre Way album artwork leaked online last September.
A tatted Soulja Boy keeps his neck froze on the cover of The DeAndre Way, his third studio album, due Nov. 2. The 20-year-old rapper has already served up three singles including "Pretty Boy Swag," the Bei Maejor-assisted "Blowing Me Kisses," and trunk rattler "Speakers Going Hammer." Aside from the blue and orange color schemes, both covers ultimately share the same look and also give fans an up-close-and-personal look at the rapper's neck/face tattoos. (Rap-Up)
Soulja Boy's producer, DJ Woogie, recently talked about the forthcoming album.
"It's gonna be 'legendary,'" Woogie said in an interview. "He has a lot of hot records on there [like this song] called 'Making The Cut' that is on the album. You know, Soulja Boy has grown since the time he did 'Crank Dat' to now...He's grown a lot. He's learned a lot more about the rap game and [has] said that himself in some of his raps. He said that he learned more, and people thought he was wack. He became more versatile, and look at him now. Everybody wants a favor; everybody wants a freestyle, or a feature. People used to sleep on the kid, now everybody is on 'em more or less to say!" (All Hip Hop)
A few months ago, Soulja Boy discussed what differences fans would notice on his third solo LP.
"This one, my lyrics are better, my lyrics are on another level,"Soulja Boy said in an interview. "My beats are on another level. I'm richer. I look better and I'm more successful, it's an upgrade. I been in the studio with Kanye, rocking. I haven't been in the studio with Rihanna yet, but she said she wants to get something done. Shouts out to Drake, been in the studio with Drake. Been in the studio with Nicki Minaj, I got something. Shouts out to Trey Songz, I was just in the studio with him. I got something on there. Ray J, Snoop Dogg, that's about it." (BET)
