Friday, Nov 5, 2010 5:40PM
Grammy-winning rapper Lupe Fiasco has responded to recent remarks by Soulja Boy Tell Em which cited him as an overly complex lyrical emcee.
In response, Lupe playfully taunted Soulja's "Pretty Boy Swag" and tweeted some rhymes on Twitter.
"SUPER LYRIC DAT HO! YUUUULE!!! @XXLStaff: Soulja Boy: "I Don't Wanna be Super-Lupe-Fiasco-Lyrical"... http://bit.ly/bQCsZz," Lupe tweeted yesterday (November 4).
"Lemme see...LYRIC BOY SWAG, U CAN'T UNDERSTAND ME CUZ MY LYRIC BOY SWAG!!! Hahaha..."
"I like the lil homey Souljah...he doing his thang...to each his own..M.O.E!"
"U right GOE! RT @Rellivent: RT @LupeFiasco: I like the lil homey Souljah...he doing his thang...to each his own..M.O.E!/ Not Over God G.O.M."
"God over everything wrist look like a blizzard, dairy queen! Lamborghini mean rims look like wedding rings & I keep a queen like beds&things."
"I balled like monks, and got love in the hood like Cupid in the trunk! Porsche Dumb for a day and Ferrari stupid for a month" (Lupe Fiasco's Twitter)
In Soulja Boy's interview, he explains a desire to be the best but not too complex.
In XXL's November 2010 issue, on stands now, SB tells us he has grown as an MC. "I can't keep playin' around, because if you keep playin' around, people are gonna think you're a joke," he said in the piece, written by contributor Matt Barone. "At some point, you have to get serious." But don't get it twisted, Soulja doesn't wanna be the next Lupe Fiasco. "I don't want to be super-Lupe-Fiasco-lyrical and n*ggas don't know what the f*ck I'm talking about," he added. "I want to be the best," he continued. "I want to be recognized in that category where I'm nominated for Best Rapper with Jay-Z and Kanye and Wayne. I wanna get a Grammy. I want Best Rap Album of the Year... I've made millions of dollars off of doing my style, but, hey, I can rap, too." (XXL Mag)
Lupe, known for speaking his mind, recently blasted MTV for playfully making a list of things he could do to avoid his new album, Lasers, getting shelved.
"Oh snap...MTV (illuminati's favorite network) back on the attack...why can't y'all just chill out? Salacious banality @ the speed of light? I think I've been very good natured with you. I personally know several employees of your company. You guys know me as well. I'm confused. Where is the true music journalism??? where is Suchin?!! What happened? Where are the honest critiques of cultural expression? For it's not about being RIGHT it's about being HOT Fame over self-awareness and virtue Hedonism over self respect Celebrity over cerebral. A destroying force in our culture and society just like rest of the useless vapid spectacles that pour out of our tv's and radios." (Rap Radar)
After creating a stir, Lupe later defended his decision to speak out publicly.
"They did a story before which was 'Lupe Fiasco: What Happened,' and it was kinda like, 'F*ck you mean what happened?,' like, what are you talking about," Lupe told radio host Angela Yee in an interview. "I kinda let it go because I know those dudes, personally, so it's like, why y'all letting these stories come out like this? ... It was bias. If it was unbiased, then you should have reported on the protest and that's as unbiased as you could possibly be and just tell the story directly. Get Atlantic Records' half and get my half and put it together. Don't put it on me like I'm just this little monster who don't want to listen to my A&R because you honestly don't know what the story is, so they just kinda caught me in a bad place when they came out with the second story which was like the '10 Reasons For Lupe Fiasco To Be Successful.' You can't dictate what success is to me. You don't know what I have, materially, you don't know what I've achieved. When they wrote the story, I was on my way to being principal for the day at my old grade school on the west side of Chicago. Why ain't you talk about that, that's success." (Team Yee TV)
