With the recent announcement of plans to release a new album entitled Riches, Royalty & Respect, SOHH reached out to hip-hop heavyweight Kool G Rap to get the inside scoop on what listeners can expect to hear.
Remaining cool and confident this time around, Kool G said that he explored the creative side of his rap persona on the new album.
"This [album] is G Rap in 2010 and basically this album is about G Rap being a little more expressive than I normally do on any of my projects," G told SOHH. "So this is G Rap and pieces of G Rap and not every song is related to real life incidents, I was creative too, but this is the first album where you can find a trace of that. I got [producer] Supa Dave for a few tracks. Supa Dave did a good four or five tracks on the album. We did the collab thing on a good portion of the album." (SOHH)
While declining to pinpoint an exact release date, Kool G is looking to drop the album next year.
"Right now, I'm aiming [to put the album out] for March," Kool G added. "I don't have a definite date yet, but I'm looking at March 2011 right now. I'm doing this as my expression of art. I'm not doing it to try and blend in with what's going on right now. This is what I do, this is my craft and this is my expression for right now. I'm not really concerned with the climate of music right now, I'm very much aware of what's going on right now in the industry." (SOHH)
Producer Hump recently talked about collaborating with the rap legend on his new album.
"It's nothing short of a dream come true. And what makes this experience even sweeter is that KGR isn't staying in his comfort zone. On this new album, he will shock people - and he has never been hotter. He is in his prime right now - lyrically, vocally, creatively - everything. He's the greatest lyricist (to me) of all time - and I am very blessed to be a part of hip-hop history in the making." (Future Producers)
In September, Kool G released a song from the project entitled, "Sad."
Though Kool G Rap got slapped with the living-legend tag a while ago, ensuring he'd never have to work again outside of guest spots on VH1's Hip Hop Honors shows, the legendary (see, here we go!) Queens rapper is back cutting verses with Riches, Royalty & Respect, his fourth solo album and first since 2002. The first song off the album, "Sad," features G Rap gritting it out about the hood over a soul instrumental laid down by Supa Dave. It's been a while since his days with DJ Polo, and those VH1 shows are probably the only time he's going to get any serious mainstream attention, but KGR continues to age gracefully. (At least he hasn't turned to Auto-Tuner like Flava Flav has!) (Prefix Mag)
