[With Dr. Dre starting to come out of his shell about Detox's long-awaited release, producer Just Blaze shares his thoughts on the hitmaker's quest for perfection on the LP.]
I can't really speak for Dr. Dre,but what I can say is I know what it's like to work for perfection [when] you want something to be right. At the same time, I think initially when he first [announced the album], I think he was still mulling the idea.
I think when Dre first started talking about it, he wasn't ready to do it. From conversations I've had with him, when he actually did start working on it, he said to me, "I was doing it before because it was expected and it was because it's what the fans wanted but I wasn't necessarily ready to do it. Now I'm ready to go."
I think it may be a situation where he might have mentioned it or put the word out there too early. Sometimes, us creatives types, we do that. We think out loud, we say things we're planning on doing but may not actually be in the space to do yet, and so you really have to get to that point in order to really give and put the right product out.
Outside of that, I really can't comment on it but I will say at one point he told me his head wasn't necessarily there. Maybe he was doing it because he already mentioned it, so he started working on it; but mentally, he could have had too many things going on.
Then, as it structured, you had all these unfortunate situations where records started leaking and they hacked into his files and all his music started popping up and that's discouraging too because when you are a perfectionist, the worst thing you can have done is get your music exposed before it's ready.
Just Blaze is a former Roc-A-Fella Records hitmaker responsible for crafting tracks for Jay-Z, Kanye West, Cam'ron and other ex-Roc members. He is also known for working with artists outside of his camp including Game, Joe Budden, T.I., Fabolous, Juelz Santana and more.
