[With this week's release of Death of a Pop Star, David Banner gives the Top 5 reasons why rap fans should support an evolutionary album.]
1. Business Before Pleasure
First off, I want to apologize to all the fans for the delay. I want to say it's my fault. It ain't 9th Wonder's fault, it ain't a record label's fault, it's my fault for the delay for Death of a Pop Star not coming out earlier. The reason why is because through all the stuff that I've been through with my personal situations, putting out my solo projects, I'm a business man and now that I run my own company I know what happens if you don't send out a certain amount of copies. I know what happens if you don't have the right person behind you. As dope as OutKast is, L.A. Reid had a lot to do with their success. [The same goes for] Kanye West being attached to Jay-Z, even though Kanye's really dope, him being on the Roc d*mn sure helped. So with this record, I had to make sure it was in the right place in order for it to get exactly what it deserves.
2. Vital As Water
I wanted to make sure there was something strong behind this for the fans. I didn't want to waste this record and just put something out there. I "know" this is what the people need. This album right here is right in-between conscious and gangster rap. It's right in the middle. I've never seen an album that balances what we need and what we want.
3. We Are The Franchise
Even though this album has been a long time coming, everything still sounds the same. We added a few extra songs, but nothing more. We did some tracks with Anthony Hamilton and Erykah Badu. When I was putting this together, I wanted to add a live band to it and shoot a short movie to go with it. We have a special clothing line, comic book, cartoon and a lot of stuff that I really wanted to attach to this. Wait and see.
4. Drop It Like It's Hot
This album is a movement. If God allows me to have my way, Death of a Pop Star, something from it is going to come out all year. First the album drops, then the graphic novel is gonna drop, then the short movie is gonna drop and after that, the clothes are gonna drop. It all has a message behind it. There may be a Death of a Pop Star book.
5. Appealing To The Best Of Both Worlds
Lately, something I've been thinking about is what this album will lead to. It may not be me and 9th Wonder next time. It may be Jay-Z and Mannie Fresh, it may be Lil Wayne and Mack Maine. It could be whoever is a part of the movement depending on how big the project blows and how much people want to be a part of it. I don't think we have a luxury of splitting the so-called backpackers and gangsters and the regular rap crowd apart. So we'll see where this album takes us.
You Decide. Will you buy Death of a Pop Star?
