Weeks after incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne released an open letter to fans publicly co-signing a new song by R&B veteran Eric Benet, the singer has shared his reaction to the gesture.
Wayne informed his fans that Benet's new "Sometimes I Cry" was a certified hit.
"Sometimes I Cry," currently No. 5 on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay chart, finds Benet dealing with the regrets of losing someone. He says even when he first heard the song he felt "goosebumps." "When I'm in the studio, I'm making music for me but if it gives me goosebumps, that's my barometer -- that lets me know it's ready for people to hear," says Benet of the track. Still, Benet wasn't sure if fans of other genres would appreciate it, much less Wayne. "Somewhere in the back of my mind I think, 'country won't feel this, polka won't feel this.' I know that's an extreme jump from R&B and hip-hop, but, I don't automatically think some hard hip-hop head will appreciate it. For Wayne to be feeling this song makes me feel like I struck a nerve." Within Wayne's letter, he acknowledges the song as one of the best out right now.
"I only listen to slow jams and ESPN. Shoutout to Keith Stewart and Dr. Bob Lee on WBLS, and Lenny Green on KISSfm. That's all I listen to, other than sports. Oh and if you haven't heard the new song by Eric Benet, "Sometimes I Cry", please stop what you're doing and check it out. Well, after you finish reading this. It's the best song I've heard since Maxwell's "Woman's Worth". It's for grown folk. I actually listen to the radio all day waiting for that song. Anyway, so back to my fans, you are the best in the world. When reading those letters, you never cease to amaze me with your love. I am forever grateful." (Weezy Thanx You)
Last month, Wayne talked about the support he has received from fans since being locked up.
"[The] fans have been more than unbelievable," he said in an interview. "When I read those letters, that fan mail, and see what they say about what my music does for them, and how it helped them through situations ... to read that, that makes me take my words and my whole outlook on what I'm doing a lot more seriously. I probably get 150 pieces of mail [a day], and I probably read a good 30 each day. I get to keep [the letters], I send 'em home. If I keep 'em in the cell, they say it's a fire hazard. Honestly, I await the mail every day." (MTV)
Despite his fans' support, Wayne pleaded with them yesterday to stop sending in letters.
"I can no longer write my fans, as difficult as this maybe to say please stop sending me mail, I luv u and will see you soon," Wayne tweeted. (Lil Wayne's Twitter)
