Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne has teamed with Def Jam to release his upcoming physical I Am Not A Human Being album version with the label's new Rapstar video game.

According to reports, the packaged deal is a limited time offer.

Every customer who picks up the video game Def Jam Rapstar will receive a copy of Lil Wayne's new album. The rapper, currently in jail on gun charges, has teamed up with Def Jam and 4mm Games to distribute his new album "I Am Not Human" to customers who purchase the rap karaoke game from retailer Best Buy from Oct. 12 - Oct. 19. A similar promotion was previously done with rock band Soundgarden.

The news comes on the heels of a similar album-game bundle from Soundgarden. The reunited group is piggybacking on the newly released "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" videogame, attaching a copy of the greatest hits retrospective "Telephantasm" to 1 million versions of the game. That was a one-week exclusive made available to "Guitar Hero" fans a week before the album was otherwise available for sale. Soundgarden also provided an exclusive track to the game, "Black Rain," and the full "Telephantasm" tracklist is available in the game as downloadable content. (Billboard)

The special limited time bundle also impacts how records are accounted for by SoundScan.

This practice of bundling albums with games inspired the Recording Industry Association of America to revise its rules on awarding Gold and Platinum status to albums. "Telephantasm," for instance, was given Platinum status as a result of the 1 million bundles, as the units were nonreturnable. However, since the product was scanned by retailers as a video game, sales were not able to be counted by SoundScan as an album purchase and therefore were not reflected on Billboard's charts. Wayne's digital-only release has already charted atop its competition since being released last week.

Imprisoned rapper Lil Wayne's digital-only I Am Not A Human Being release debuted on the chart this week at No. 2 while Kenny Chesney's Hemingway's Whiskey opened atop the competition with 183,500. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Wayne's album has sold 110,300 copies in the past seven days. (SOHH Sales Wrap)
