[With this week's release of The World Needs More Skillz, reknowned lyricist/ghostwriter Skillz provides his Top 5 reasons why you should go out and support his new album.]
1. Taster's Choice
Number one, it's quality work. If you like good hip-hop music, then it's definitely for you. When people ask me what kind of music I make, who my audience is, I say I make good hip-hop music for people who appreciate good hip-hop music.
2. This Ain't No Fairy Tale
This music is more real and not fabricated. In today's market, it's not a lot that's not fabricated. My album is honest. I'm not lying. It's not fairy tale rap music. It's a lot of sh*t that people buy and they can't relate to it at all. A lot of us look at hip-hop as being something a little more close that we can grab. Now, it's like going to a movie. If you look at Ocean's 13, for that two hours you want to be taken to somewhere else and pop your head into someone else's life and rob a casino and get away with it and all of that sh*t. It's a movie and I think we started looking at hip-hop the same way. A lot of this sh*t we are involved in and hear, you're never gonna live that or experience it except for when you're listening to that CD. And that's cool, but I like my music a little more real. I like to be able to relate to the people I listen to. Don't get me wrong, you have your Diddy's and Jay-Z's and the people that are millionaires, but then you got artists that are fabricating a lot of stories to make you feel like they're that person when they're really not. I'm going to make good hip-hop music for regular people. I feel some of these people have lost what it meant to make good hip-hop music again.
3. I'm So Excited, And I Just Can't Hide It
If you're ready to experience something different, you should go out and buy this album. Comparing to my last work [2008's Million Dollar Backpack], and I know it's so cliche, but I'm an artist that pays more attention [to hip-hop] than others. I'm probably as close as a fan as any artist could ever be. I still get star struck and excited about certain sh*t like a fan would. So anybody who appreciates good music and good hip-hop, I want them to be just as excited about this sh*t as I am.
4. I Took My Time And Did It Right
It took me a while to get to the records that I wanted to get to and I know that good music takes time. I'm fortunate enough that I do enough shows and I do songwriting that I don't have to rush out an album because I need the advance or I need the money. I can pretty much take my time with my music. In today's cookie-cutter market, motherf*ckers are coming out every two weeks and a lot of these cats just end up dropping [off] and there's a lot of music coming out [after]. It took a while and I'm the type of person who cares more about quality over quantity. I could give a f*ck if you dropped five mixtapes back-to-back but none of them sh*ts I'm going to listen to again. I don't make a lot of mixtapes, but when I do, it's always something special. Something you can listen to and hear again. I aim for that rewind value.
5. I Want Your Ears
I appreciate your ear, so will you give me that. I don't want to f*ck that up. I know somewhere right now there's a rapper on the corner trying to give his CD away and ain't nobody taking it. I'm the type of artist that appreciates that. I'll never take your ear for granted. Everything that I give you is going to be the best I can give you in that particular frame of time.
