Young Money's Nicki Minaj's Video Music Awards 2010 promotional video shows off the rapper's acting skills and her career aspirations.
In the 30-second promotional clip, Minaj is seen transitioning from a young girl to rap star.
The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards are getting a double dose of Nicki Minaj. Earlier today, the network announced that the Young Money raptress would be performing during the pre-show broadcast, and now, the Best New Artist nominee is getting her swerve on in a new promo clip for the ceremony. Set to the tune of her hit "Your Love," a young Nicki poses in the mirror, dreaming of one day ruling rap. But as the clip progresses, Minaj is shown dolled up like a classic '50s debutante and zooms into the present as she hops on a motorcycle and speeds through the California streets. "Ever since she was little, she dreamed of dominating the world of rap," says the announcer. "Now the world--and every man in it--is beneath her stilettos." (Rap-Up)
Speaking on the campaign, Minaj expressed how grateful she was to be chosen.
"This thing today has been like shooting a movie," Minaj observed. "It's very specific. When I shoot videos it's just about performing and doing whatever you want. But with this it's more like, 'No, this is the shot we need so we have to ... get that shot.' ... This is something that everybody dreams of being a part of ... and I am no exception to that rule. I just feel like, this is my coming-out party. It's like, really, the pinnacle of my career so far." (MTV)
During the promotion's shooting, Minaj acknowledged how unexpected the opportunity was.
"I don't even have my album out and I'm part of the freakin' promo!" she said in an interview about the campaign. "Basically, they're documenting my rise and paralleling that with my journey, literally, to the VMAs." (Entertainment Weekly)
At this month's ceremony, Minaj will compete against other artists like Drake and B.o.B. for awards.
Katy Perry's ode to her home state "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, is up for Best Female Video, along with Ke$ha's "Tik Tok"; "Video Phone" with Lady Gaga and Beyoncé; Taylor Swift's "Fifteen" and Gaga's "Bad Romance." In Best Male Video, Usher's epic "OMG" lands a nod, as well as Jason Derulo's "In My Head," Drake's "Find Your Love," Eminem's "Not Afraid" and B.o.B's "Airplanes." Many of the pop world's recent favorites will face off in the Best New Artist category. Justin Bieber ("Baby"), Ke$ha ("Tik Tok"), Jason Derulo ("In My Head"), Nicki Minaj (for her Sean Garrett collabo "Massive Attack") and indie supergroup Broken Bells ("The Ghost Inside") will see who can dominate as this year's reigning newbie.
