Incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne got the inside scoop on Nicki Minaj's upcoming debut album being called Pink Friday through fan letters he received in jail.
Speaking with radio host Funkmaster Flex, Minaj revealed that she did not get a chance to inform Wayne of her album title before the fans.
"He said that people were writing him in jail saying, 'Oh, we loved Thank Me Later and we can't wait for Pink Friday.' So he said he was looking at the letters like, 'What the h*ll is Pink Friday? Because I didn't even tell him my album name and stuff and he found out in jail because of like, the fans writing him letters. He was like, 'OK Nick, that's the name of your album?' And we were just having a great conversation and I stayed there for like, two hours and then broke out. But thank God he'll be back November 4th." (Hot 97)
Minaj recently revealed that Wayne would not have a huge influence on the upcoming LP.
"He really hasn't had any involvement on it. But to be honest, the album doesn't sound like Wayne. I mean, he's my biggest influence, but it doesn't sound like Wayne's stuff. It sounds like Nicki." (Complex)
Earlier this month, Minaj said she predicted Pink Friday would have to be a quality project to help secure a lane for female artists.
"[Young Money] won't look to sign other female rappers if the project doesn't do well, because they're going to say, 'Well, her buzz was so crazy, and if she couldn't do it, then no one can do it,' and I don't want that to happen. So I'm doing this as well for all the girls...I hope it will open doors for all girls everywhere who ever wanted to pick up a mic and rap and who have been kind of afraid to do it...For a long time in my life, I was afraid to be a solo female rapper, because everyone told me, 'It doesn't work. It's not going to happen. Record companies are never going to invest in you just to get it. Just be part of a group.' ... Even as far as I've come now is already a testament in my mind, so I hope the female rappers understand how big it is for our culture that the album does well." (V-103)
Last month, Minaj revealed she initially wanted the LP to drop in 2011.
"I love him very much," Minaj said about Lil Wayne. "I miss him and he's such a sweetheart and all of that good stuff. But I will see him soon. The album release just so happened, [Cash Money Records co-founders] Baby and Slim, they were like, 'November,' and I was like 'No, no, no,' I wanted to put my album out next year. I don't feel like people really know me yet." (Honey Mag)
Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday is scheduled to drop Tuesday, November 23rd.
