After the recent buzz over Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz heating up Kanye West's "Power" remix, SOHH caught up with the original song's producer Symbolyc One, to get his reaction to the record's momentum.
For S1, seeing his "Power" record grow into a nationwide hit and then remixed with rap royalty like Jay-Z has been unbelievable.
"It's like a dream come true," S1 told SOHH. "Through my years of producing, I always knew I would get to this point sometime, I just didn't know when. So to actually be at this point being on my record or hearing Kanye on the record, hearing John Legend, hearing Swizz Beatz, it's like, man, it's an incredible feeling. It's like words can't explain the feeling you get just realizing you're at that place you once dreamed about being at." (SOHH)
The Dallas, Texas-based producer also weighed in on seeing his "Power" hit visualized into a 90-second, one verse music video.
"Just the other day, the 'Power' video was number two on '106 & Park,' so I've been keeping up with the video," S1 added. "I was impressed [with the video], the only thing, with me, is that I wish it was longer. It just kinda cuts off, but creatively and artistically, I think it's dope. For me personally, I'm always looking at my music as art so I'm always approaching my music in an artistic way. 'How can I be more creative?' So for him to do that and really go against the grain from what everybody else is doing, that's what I love the most. It kinda separated him from the pack of what everybody else was doing. That's what I'm always trying to do, I'm always trying to separate myself from the pack when I'm in the lab creating or doing things. So from that perspective, I think it was incredible." (SOHH)
Yeezy's "Power" remix debuted on the Internet in late August.
Martin Louis the King Jr. powers up with the remix to his first single featuring the almighty Jay-Z, John Legend, and Swizz Beatz, who he called the greatest rap producer of all time. The hip-hop cash kings trade verses about their superstar status and dominance over the bombastic beat. Swizzy samples "The Power" by Snap! on the latter part of the remix and Yeezy reminds us that he has friends in high places. "Jay my big brother and B my little sister, and excuse me, but you can't see my little sister," he raps. (Rap-Up)
After the "Power" music video debuted last month, Young Money director David Rousseau gave SOHH his insight on the visual.
"I think creatively, it's a great idea, and if more people end up doing it and he takes it even further, I think it can change the way people look at music videos. It's an evolution of music videos. The fact is that he is pushing the boundaries and I think it is only going to help and make the art form better. He's daring people to not look at music videos the same way you always do. The fact that it's only 90 seconds long, he's challenging you to go, 'Yo, the video's don't have to be the whole song. I can change the rules.'" (SOHH Guest Star)
