New York rapper Fabolous has voiced his hopes on seeing rap kingpins Jay-Z and Nas return to their roots by releasing underground mixtape projects.
For F-a-b-o, it would be memorable to have either artist cater to the mixtape circuit.
"A Nas mixtape would be crazy, a Hov one too," he told MTV News. "We haven't seen any of the icons do it [in a while]. I think somewhere, we need a place where Hov doesn't have to talk corporate and Nas doesn't have to get too deep on us. We need one of those. I just wanna hear Nas [rapping], 'Splittin' Phillies, sippin' on Baileys with three Israelis.' I don't know if he's still in that space," Fab said, reciting one of the God MC's memorable mixtape freestyles. "A lot of things have transpired since. And I wanna hear Hov talk his thing. He still talks his thing and Nas still talks his thing, but I wanna see them in their mixtape essence." (MTV)
Earlier this year, Fab said he hoped Nas could re-emerge himself into the hip-hop mainstream.
"Nas, Nas, like Nas is so ill," Fab told interviewer Karen Civil. "I think this younger generation of hip-hop really don't know, like, I got a dude who rolls with me, he's like 21, 22, he don't know any of the ill Nas, he don't know Illmatic, you just don't know that Nas that I grew up with. I wish Nas would just let these young boys know he's that dude." (Karen Civil)
While a mixtape may not be in the immediate works, Kanye West recently announced plans to drop an EP with Jay.
"Me and jay bout to drop a 5 song album called "Watch the Throne"," Ye wrote Friday (August 27) evening. (Kanye West's Twitter)
Nas is also working on a follow-up to 2008's Untitled with help from "Love the Way You Lie" producer Alex Da Kid.
"I want to try and keep him, obviously as Nas but just to bring him to a broader audience," Alex told SOHH last spring. "Try to get him into that rhythmic radio as well as urban and I want to bring him to a broader audience. He's one of the biggest rappers to ever do it. I definitely want to make sure he goes to a broader audience. Working with an icon like Nas, I definitely would want to make something from scratch, I really haven't had the chance to think about it because I've been so busy but I kinda know where I want to go with it. I definitely want to make something from scratch for Nas." (SOHH)
