Brazen soul-singer Erykah Badu has reportedly settled her legal battle with Texas court officials regarding her controversial "Window Seat" video by agreeing to six months probation.
Reports also claim the crooner paid a small fine for publicly stripping nude in a Dallas park for her video last March.
The global publicity bump Erykah Badu got for stripping down to her essentials and walking the streets of Dallas for her "Window Seat" video shoot was probably well worth the $500 fine she finally paid last week. A Dallas city spokesperson said the singer paid the maximum fine and agreed to serve six months probation for the stunt, in which she was filmed slowly taking off her clothes as she walked through Dealey Plaza, the site of President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963. The incident took place on March 13, and a defiant Badu entered a not guilty plea in April to a charge of disorderly conduct. (MTV)
Despite the fact that Badu chose to utilize nudity for her video as a means of visually propelling a symbolic message, Badu was charged with disorderly conduct following the video's release.
Sgt. Warren Mitchell said Friday the decision to cite Badu for disorderly conduct -- a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500 -- came after witness Ida Espinosa, 32, of Vernon, offered a sworn statement to police Thursday. Espinosa declined to comment to The Associated Press on Friday. "Having a fact witness that was there is what let us file the charges," Mitchell said. "After much discussion, we feel that these charges best fit her conduct. She disrobed in a public place without regard to individuals and small children who were close by." Mitchell said the department has had "people calling from all across the country to express their concern." (Associated Press)
In late April, Badu pleaded not guilty in the case against her.
Erykah Badu entered a plea of not guilty Wednesday to the charge of disorderly conduct in relation to a video in which she strips in downtown Dallas' Dealey Plaza. In March, the 39-year-old Dallas singer went nude in public for her video called "Window Seat." Badu said she picked Dealey Plaza since it was one of the most popular places in the city. Badu previously addressed being fined $500 by Texas police over the message-driven nude stripping.
"I just wanted to bring dialogue to it. And I did. And they are still talking about it. And as long as they are talking about it, we know that they are being exposed to it. To tell you the truth, I haven't received a letter in the mail or nothing. All I know is the Dallaschief of the police went to the record store last week and bought my album. (VIBE)
