Grammy-winning rapper Eminem reflects on the passing of his 8 Mile co-star Brittany Murphy's passing last December in the August/September VIBE.

Em reveals his close relationship with Murphy and how unexpected the 32 year-old's death was.

"It was crazy. It's crazy. It's crazy because at one point we were very close and she was a really good person. It's crazy when you see things not just with her but just all these things that are happening in Hollywood with people in music, with people in acting...Famous people. Famous people are overdosing at alarming rates and--that almost sounded like a commercial. Wow." (VIBE)

The actress passed away in late December 2009 from pneumonia and drug intoxication.

Brittany Murphy died of cardiac arrest early Sunday morning, after her mother had found her unconscious in the shower, according to a report by TMZ. The actress was 32. It is reported that a call went out to 911 from Murphy's Los Angeles home at 8 a.m. Attempts to revive her were not successful. A spokesperson for Cedars Sinai Medical Center confirmed to PEOPLE that Murphy died at the facility Sunday at 10:04 a.m. (PEOPLE)

Her death sparked Twitter reactions from Talib Kweli, Lauren London and Russell Simmons.

"I met britney murphy before her star rose," Simmons wrote Sunday (December 20) night, "its tough to find peace in fame. I wish her peace and happiness in her next lifetime." (Russell Simmons' Twitter)

She is widely known in the hip-hop world for her on-screen time with Eminem.

Her role in "8 Mile" led to more recognition, Murphy told The Associated Press in 2003. "That changed a lot," she said. "That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not." Murphy credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success. "When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me," Murphy told the AP in 2003. "I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn't stifle any of that. She always believed in me." (Associated Press)
