With today's release of Ras Kass' A.D.I.D.A.S. album, SOHH hit up the West Coast rap veteran to get the inside scoop on his new double CD.
Ras told SOHH his latest LP can be compared to any new album dropping in 2010.
"The project ended up being a double CD and then we decided to do it independently," Ras told SOHH about his new album A.D.I.D.A.S. "I always say when you can control your destiny, that's the goal of life, being able to do what you want to do and how you want to do it. So for me, this is the first time I've really, really, spread my wings and do it how I want to do it. I'm ecstatic. It's competitive, superior product. I can honestly say you can play my sh*t against whoever says they got a hot album this year and f*ck a record sale, I'm saying beats, production, concept, lyrics, sh*t's banging. I went in. I'm by myself, 24 records. I'm good money for 2010." (SOHH)
He also talked about why the project was made into a double album.
"I couldn't fit every record I wanted on there and that's what the problem was in the first place," Ras added. "It was supposed to just be one CD and once I started getting songs and concepts together and recording them, I was like I can't fit it all in one CD. So I was like, 'F*ck it, I'll have to make a double CD.' And trust me, I recorded a lot more than people'll ever hear for the album because usually if I have something that doesn't fit the concept of an album, I'll usually just put it to the side. We'll use it eventually but it's not something I would want to put out any time soon. And it may be a song that I thought was really dope but not for this particular concept." (SOHH)
The project features guest appearances and production from Royce Da 5'9, D12's Mr. Porter and more.
Following his unfortunately drab 2008 album, Institutionalized Vol. 2, Ras Kass began hitting the web like his younger contemporaries. He dropped the pay-what-you-want The Quarterly LP along with a few mixtapes in 2009 and early 2010. But his proper up to his second Institutionalized record comes withA.D.I.D.A.S. (All Day I Dream About Spittin'). And it's a heavy on the features as Kass is joined by an all-star cast in Jean Grae, Royce Da 5'9", Evidence, and Fashawn. In terms of production, the California-bred MC received beats from DJ Rhetmattic, DJ Babu, and Mr. Porter, who help ensure this album isn't just filled with fiery rhymes. (Prefix Mag)
In order to help fund the album, Ras launched an online campaign earlier this year.
In 2010 Ras Kass launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the manufacture of 1000 CDs and 500 vinyls for his A.D.I.D.A.S. project and a viral marketing campaign called Save The Ras Kass, which included a series of satirical webisodes about the plight of the endangered emcee." (Wikipedia)
