Grammy-nominated rapper Nas has officially hooked up with producer Alex da Kid for work on his upcoming untitled solo album.
Alex told SOHH Nas was a fan of the "Airplanes" record he put together for B.o.B.
"I'm working on Nas' album," Alex revealed to SOHH. "I kinda know his manager, through my publisher, actually Jessica Rivera at Universal. She publishes Nas and when 'Airplanes' came out, he was like a big fan of 'Airplanes,' like, he loved that song and when it came out he was like, 'Yo let's get it, let's roll.' But our schedules just haven't matched up yet. I think I'm going to get with him in three weeks in New York, at some point, so yeah, I'm excited for that." (SOHH)
Alex also said he would like to broaden Nas' reach to fans by considering both urban and rhythmic sounds.
"I want to try and keep him, obviously as Nas but just to bring him to a broader audience," Alex added. "Try to get him into that rhythmic radio as well as urban and I want to bring him to a broader audience. He's one of the biggest rappers to ever do it. I definitely want to make sure he goes to a broader audience. Working with an icon like Nas, I definitely would want to make something from scratch, I really haven't had the chance to think about it because I've been so busy but I kinda know where I want to go with it. I definitely want to make something from scratch for Nas." (SOHH)
Last month, Nas talked about how he typically compiles producers for his albums.
"Well I have a wish list sometimes or I have a dream list of who I would love to work with and wish they would want to get in the studio and do records or whatever," Nas said in an interview. "Then I have my own ideas of being a producer. And what happens is a lot of time goes by with me being indecisive so it winds up with me kind of like doing what I have to do really fast because I played around for so long. Then, the deadlines come. But, you never know who has it, everyone's got a lot of talent. You have Little Brother, you have Drumma Boy. There's a lot of dudes I like right now. You have DJ Toomp." After debuting on the charts at No. 5 in May, Nas' last album Distant Relatives has remained on the charts.
Nas and Damian Marley's Distant Relatives collaboration record shot down eight positions to No. 18 with 17,100 this week. With 14 days under their belts, the duo's duet project stands at 99,800 sold copies. (SOHH Sales Wrap)
No further album details have been revealed as of now.
