Rapper M.I.A. recently shared her thoughts on Nas and said the rap veteran should be respected for his contributions to hip-hop.
M.I.A. said she would choose the Queens, New York emcee over Jay-Z.
"I love Nas records, in the car, in the radio, or whatever," M.I.A. told radio personality Angie Martinez in an interview. "[One day] I'm having a conversation with the cab driver and he's asking me [who I like better between Jay-Z and Nas], and I like both of them equally, but, yeah, Nas. Of course I have love for Jay-Z, I've performed with him and he's on my remix and stuff like that, and at the same time, it's important that people respect Nas because he's done a lot because and I'm making sure that people know that about him. Just because he's not like a private jet around the world, yacht, kind of guy, that needs to sort of be clear." (Hot 97)
Known for inspiring the Kanye West-produced "Swagger Like Us," M.I.A. recently gave her opinion on what separates both rap veterans.
"Jay became the biggest representation of rap music who's still alive, started dating Beyoncé--everything was so much bigger and better with Jay-Z. I hope people don't think that that wins. The fact that Nas didn't become all this sort of stuff changes people's perception about the music and the work he achieved in his lifetime. I don't wanna say Jay-Z sold out, but I just feel like we have to wait another 10 years to see what happens. Jay-Z's ambition was to become like Frank Sinatra, a household name all over the planet, and own a casino in Vegas and stuff like that. And I think Nas was really sticking to knowledge. I still think the biggest point about hip-hop is in there somewhere, what happens to those two artists." (Complex)
Nas recently talked about Jay's ambition to stay on top of the rap game.
[Jay-Z] is the one that smacks everybody in the face that's out there and wanted to say what he wasn't and what he couldn't do. The challenge is that people always count you out and even when you have a hit record and put out a hit album, you're gonna have people dissing you. I think he's showing you: I won't be stopped ever. And that's motivation for everyone else." (VIBE)
Nas also recently said he was impressed by Jay's "Empire State of Mind" hit record.
"It's just keeping that whole thing alive -- this New York thing," Nas said in an interview. "There are a lot of people complaining about New York hip-hop, about it not being what it was, and he stood up and now we have another anthem to be proud of...I think [Jay-Z] pretty much handled it. Of course, I'm always gonna talk about New York -- it's the greatest city in the world. But I'm not in the studio making a New York record now to one up anybody, no." (Wall Street Journal)
